Introduction to the Office of Emergency Management (OEM)
The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, wellbeing, and preparedness of communities in the face of natural, man-made, or technological emergencies. OEM is dedicated to coordinating efforts before, during, and after an emergency to mitigate risks, manage resources, and guide effective responses to protect lives and property.
At its core, the Office of Emergency Management works across multiple levels of government, non-governmental organizations, and private sectors to develop comprehensive emergency plans, conduct training exercises, and provide the necessary tools and resources to respond effectively to crises. This includes responding to natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods, and wildfires, as well as human-made events such as terrorism, cyberattacks, and public health emergencies.
OEM's main objectives include:
- Preparedness: Developing disaster response plans, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring that the community is informed and ready for emergencies.
- Response: Coordinating the immediate actions required during an emergency, mobilizing resources, and providing critical information to the public.
- Recovery: Overseeing the efforts to restore normalcy and rebuild after a disaster, helping affected communities regain stability and resilience.
- Mitigation: Identifying long-term strategies to reduce the impact of future disasters and enhance the resilience of the community.
Through collaborative partnerships and a proactive, integrated approach, OEM works tirelessly to create a safer, more prepared environment for all members of the community, ensuring that, when disaster strikes, the response is swift, organized, and effective.

Staying Alert and
Informed During Emergencies - IPAWS
ECO EM follows the national standard called the Integrated Public Alert and Warning Svstem. IPAWS is a comprehensive alerting platform designed to improve the nation's capability to disseminate timely and actionable information during emergencies. It enables federal, state, and local authorities to send critical alerts to the public across multiple communication channels, including radio, television, wireless devices, and the internet.
IPAWS supports various alert types, such as weather warnings, natural disasters, and public safety threats, ensuring that communities receive accurate and relevant information quickly. By integrating various alert systems and enhancing coordination among agencies, IPAWS helps to ensure that citizens are informed and can take appropriate actions to protect themselves and their families during emergencies.
The system also prioritizes accessibility, enabling alerts to reach diverse populations, including those with disabilities or language barriers, thus enhancing overall community resilience.
You can subscribe to these important alerts by visiting the Borough website (englewoodcliffsnj.org), where we have posted a link to OEM alerts. Currently, we have four categories ... TRAFFIC ALERTS, WEATHER ALERTS, EMERGENCY ALERTS, and COMMUNITY INFO ALERTS. The latter (COMMUNTY INFO) will be non-emergency and "FYI" type information. You can sign up for as many categories as you would like. You can also decide if you wish to receive notifications via email or TEXT; or both. We will add more categories as the need arises. If you have any suggestions, let us know!
